ORIGINAL LIST [] TOP 100 VIDEO GAME SONGS [] TOP 100 MOVIE SCORE SONGS

Alright, we all know about P2P programs and torrents, but those are sometimes pretty
limited when it comes to two things:

1- Finding rarer music
2- Finding new music you enjoy

So here's ways for you to get a ridiculous amount of  hard-to-find  songs without
spending a dime. Be warned that it takes a little bit of work.

FIRST, get JETAUDIO. You can find it here for free: http://www.download.com/JetAudio-Basic/3000-2167_4-10617379.html

This is a program that will allow you to record music that is playing on your computer.
There's probably a ton of others, but I don't know em and I know this one works fine.

how it works:

1- Double-click on the icon to open it, and press "record".

2- Set a path for the recorded music. I make it record to my desktop.

3-  Set the encoder to "MP3 - MPEG layer 3"
encoder

4. To record, press "start". Choose either "line in" or "stereo mix"

5. Test a short sample of what you recorded to make sure it works.
These settings might only work on my computer for some reason, so test around.
6. MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN WHAT WAS RECORDED WHEN, FOR
INSTANCE IN A WORD DOCUMENT OR NOTEPAD.

SECOND, get AUDACITY. You can find it here for free:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

This program allows you to open the music you record with Jetaudio, edit each track
and export it as whatever type of file you desire.

how it works:

1- Select what you have recorded with Jetaudio and open it.

2- Zoom in or out to find the song you want to export.

3- Use the selection tool  and select more than the entire song.

THE MIGHTY SELECTION TOOL:

4. Then do edit> copy,  file > new, then edit> paste. I.e. paste the file into a new document.

5. Still using the selection tool, cut the parts you don't want ( select + cut )

6. Get lame-enc.dll : http://www.tongsoft.com/mp3-encoder.htm
This enables you to export your files as MP3s

7. Go into file > export as MP3 and name the song appropriately. Be sure to fill the tags.

There you go, now you have an MP3 file of a song, just like you'd get in any torrent
file or from a P2P program.

SOURCES OF MUSIC

Make sure you take note of what is being recorded and when, or else you'll have a lot of trouble when it comes time to segment your songs mp3s!!! Use Word or Notepad to note the time ( Jetaudio shows you how long you've been recording ), the artist's name and the track.

1. Pandora http://www.pandora.com/

how it works:  You enter an artist or a song title, and they create a station that plays the same kind of music!
Best at:  Finding new music you will love.

The Good:
- No adds
- You can create as many stations as you want
- You can skip songs
- Very accurate
- Ridiculously vast library of songs.
- All-around best thing ever to discover NEW obscure english music in english.

The Bad:
- If you fail to record a track the first time around, it might take a while for pandora  to replay it.
- You can only skip a fixed number of songs every hour on each station ( but who cares? ).

2. Live 365 http://www.live365.com/index.live

how it works:  You can browse a vast array of user-created radio stations in ANY and I mean ANY genre.
Best at: Finding new foreign/bizarre/ not really songs audio.

The Good:
- Extremely diverse
-The best way to get weird things: j-pop, tv adds, movie quotes, comedy etc.

The Bad:
- Some audio ads and restricted access to some stations  if you aren't a VIP member.
- You can't skip songs, though you can vote on them. I don't know if it makes much of a difference.

                           3. Youtube http://www.youtube.com/

how it works:  Watch any user-uploaded video.
Best at:  Finding things to record instantly, and finding other top songs by the same artists.

The Good:
- Surprising number of obscure bands and songs available.
- You get to watch the music videos.
- You don't have to wait around to record a song you want.

The Bad:
- Sound quality might be crappy or random
- Might be extra sound effects added into the songs because it's from a music video.

4. last.fm http://www.last.fm

how it works:  Download an application that records what you listen to on your computer and uses the data to suggest new music you might like.
Best at:  Nothing much.

The Good:
-  When it records the date, it shows you a little bio of the bands, that's fun.
- You can get in touch with other listeners who have similar tastes

The Bad:
- Slow and sort of useless. Google is almost as good.

                             5. Zophar's Domain http://www.zophar.net/

how it works:  Large archive of oldschool emulation.
Best at:  Getting thousands of songs from old video games.

The Good:
-  Very complete library of everything older than playstation.
-  Lots of ressources and links to help you out, Just don't be lazy.

The Bad:
- Takes a little more work to get what you want, but you can't find it anywhere else, so tough shit.
- Doesn't always give the info on the artist.

==========================================================================

WHENEVER I LISTEN TO PANDORA OR LIVE365, I HAVE JETAUDIO OPENED AND IT'S ALLOWED ME
TO DISCOVER DOZENS OF SONGS THAT I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE NEVER HEARD BEFORE. IF YOU
ARE WILLING TO PUT A LITTLE WORK INTO THIS, YOU CAN GET A LOT OUT OF IT. BTW IT'S PROBABLY ILLEGAL. RUN.
